Schliemann's biography and the Troy excavation

Schliemann was born in Mecklenburg, made a substantial commercial fortune in the Russian indigo trade and California gold rush, and at age 46 devoted his remaining career to archaeological investigation of the Homeric world. He had read the Iliad repeatedly from childhood and had become convinced, against the prevailing scholarly consensus, that the poem preserved an account of a real historical conflict at a real geographic location.

The mainstream classical scholarship of Schliemann's period treated Homer's epics as essentially mythological. The city of Troy, if it had existed at all, was assumed to be irrecoverable; the Iliad's geographic descriptions were treated as poetic invention or as based on locations no longer identifiable. Schliemann rejected this consensus. He read the Iliad's geographic content — the location of the city in relation to the Hellespont, the Trojan plain, the rivers Scamander and Simois, the topography around the city — as accurate description that could be used to identify the historical site.

Working from the Iliad's text combined with the topographical research of Frank Calvert (an English archaeologist who had already proposed Hisarlık as the site), Schliemann began excavations at the mound of Hisarlık in northwestern Anatolia in 1870. The excavations continued, with substantial interruptions and revisions, through Schliemann's death in 1890 and were continued by his collaborator Wilhelm Dörpfeld and subsequent archaeologists into the twentieth century.

The results vindicated Schliemann's principal contention while complicating its details. Hisarlık contained the superimposed remains of nine successive cities (designated Troy I through Troy IX) spanning roughly 3000 BCE to 500 CE. One of these layers — most likely Troy VI or Troy VIIa, depending on which contemporary archaeologist one consults — was a substantial Late Bronze Age fortified city destroyed by violence in approximately the chronological window the Greek tradition associated with the Trojan War (twelfth or thirteenth century BCE). The mainstream classical-archaeology consensus now treats Hisarlık as the historical Troy; the Iliad is treated as preserving genuine memory of Late Bronze Age conflict, however heavily elaborated by subsequent poetic tradition.

The methodological lesson

Schliemann's approach had several specific features that the subsequent Bible-reading tradition has drawn on:

  • Take the text seriously at the descriptive level. Schliemann read Homer's geographic descriptions as describing actual geography. Where the text said the city had two principal rivers, he looked for two principal rivers; where it specified the city's position relative to coastline and mountains, he used the description as a search criterion.
  • Set aside the prevailing scholarly consensus when it has not engaged the text directly. The classical scholarship Schliemann rejected had not actually tested its mythological reading against the available evidence; it had inherited the reading and elaborated theoretical justifications for it.
  • Accept that the literal reading may be vindicated, refuted, or partially confirmed. Schliemann did not insist in advance that the Iliad was historical in every detail. He insisted that the historicity question could be tested by reading the text literally and looking for the predicted material remains.

Schliemann's specific methodology has been substantially criticized in subsequent scholarship — his excavation techniques were destructive by modern standards, his identifications of specific finds with specific Homeric persons (the "Mask of Agamemnon," "Priam's Treasure") were enthusiastic beyond what the evidence supported, and his published accounts contain documented exaggerations and outright fabrications. The methodological principle, however, survived the personal criticisms. The principle is what Sendy and Biglino draw on.

The Sendy-Biglino methodological genealogy

The methodology Biglino articulates in 2011 and elaborates in The Naked Bible in 2022 was articulated by Jean Sendy in 1969, approximately four decades earlier. The genealogical relationship between the two figures' methodological commitments is worth setting out, because Biglino is sometimes presented in popular engagement as the originator of the approach when in fact he is its principal contemporary articulator within a longer tradition.

In Ces dieux qui firent le ciel et la terre (Robert Laffont, 1969; English: Those Gods Who Made Heaven and Earth, Berkley, 1972), Sendy writes:

"The hypothesis that forms the structure of this book is founded on portions of the Bible, read as Schliemann read Homer. What Schliemann did for Homer was exactly what I have tried to do for the Biblical narrative that concerns me. Reading the Bible as Schliemann read Homer means ignoring all the exegeses that have accumulated around it for the past two thousand years. Their avowed purpose is to seek proof of the existence of God in the Bible. To someone who reads the Bible 'à la Schliemann,' on the assumption that the text is to be taken in its most concrete sense, God is as far outside the subject as the religious beliefs of the Greeks and Trojans were to Schliemann."

The articulation is complete. Sendy specifies: (1) read the Hebrew Bible as Schliemann read Homer; (2) ignore the accumulated exegetical traditions; (3) take the text in its most concrete sense. The methodology Biglino later articulates as "obtain familiarity with the original text, disregard traditional interpretation, embrace literal reading" is the same methodology Sendy articulates here in compressed form.

Sendy's application of the method is also articulated in 1969. The same passage continues:

"When we read the Bible in that way, we must first note that the Hebrew word Elohim, usually translated as 'God,' is a plural. If we read 'Those who came from the sky,' or 'the Celestials,' each time the plural Elohim occurs we find ourselves reading a narrative that needs no exegesis, no helpful prodding, no religious conviction, in order to be thoroughly coherent."

The principal Hebrew-textual observation — Elohim as plural, requiring plural translation — is the same observation Biglino emphasizes throughout his work. Sendy preserves the observation; Biglino develops it with substantial additional philological detail.

Biglino's 2011-onward independent development

Biglino's articulation of the method came through his own work as a Hebrew Bible translator rather than through direct discipleship of Sendy. From approximately 1990 to 2007, Biglino worked as a Hebrew Bible translator for Edizioni San Paolo (the Pauline Editions, an Italian Catholic publisher with substantial Vatican connections). The translation project produced bilingual Hebrew-Italian editions of the Hebrew Bible for Catholic readers, with Biglino responsible for the Hebrew-to-Italian rendering of seventeen volumes.

The seventeen years of close direct engagement with the Hebrew text produced, in Biglino's account, a progressive realization that the text the translation was rendering bore only loose resemblance to the theological framework the surrounding apparatus assumed. As Biglino describes the process in The Naked Bible:

"This type of project, which I worked on for a few years, brought me into direct contact, let's say, with the very origins, with the etymology of each individual word. The genealogical relationship

The Sendy-Biglino genealogy operates as a case of methodological convergence rather than direct intellectual influence. Biglino does not present himself as a Sendy disciple; in many interviews and works he does not engage Sendy directly. The convergence appears to be the product of two independent figures arriving at structurally similar methodological commitments through close engagement with the Hebrew text — Sendy through his autodidactic alternative-history work in 1960s France, Biglino through his seventeen-year professional translation career in 1990s-2000s Italy.

The convergence itself is methodologically significant. When two independent figures, working from different starting points in different decades, arrive at the same hermeneutic commitments and the same principal textual observations (the plurality of Elohim, the political rather than theological character of the prohibitions, the concrete rather than allegorical character of the narratives), the convergence suggests that the text is producing the methodology when engaged closely rather than the methodology producing pre-selected readings of the text.

The corpus position registers both contributions. Sendy is the principal pre-Vorilhon methodological influence on the broader Wheel of Heaven framework; Biglino is the principal contemporary methodological articulator whose work has reached substantial reading audiences in Italy and (more recently) the Anglophone world. The three-step methodology

The Biglino Method as articulated in The Naked Bible (2022) consists of two principal steps:

"First, forget, for a moment, about all traditional interpretations. Second, focus on a literal reading, pure and simple, of those verses. The result is often astounding. And there is no need of any magic carpets to imagine who knows what. The Old Testament speaks for itself, explicitly and transparently."

Biglino elsewhere articulates an additional commitment — that ambiguous Hebrew terms should be preserved untranslated where their precise meaning is unclear — which functions as a precondition for the two principal steps. The composite three-step methodology, as the corpus applies it:

Step 1: Obtain familiarity with the original text

  • Ruach (רוּחַ) — conventionally translated as "spirit" but with the primary Hebrew sense of "wind," "breath," "moving air." Genesis 1:2's ruach Elohim merachefet al penei ha-mayim is conventionally rendered "the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters"; the Hebrew is closer to "the wind/breath of Elohim was hovering over the surface of the waters."
  • Nachash (נָחָשׁ) — the term for the serpent in Genesis 3; etymologically related to roots meaning "to hiss," "to whisper," "to practice divination," and "shining bronze." The corpus treats nachash as a collective designation rather than a single reptile.
  • Bnei ha-Elohim (בְּנֵי הָאֱלֹהִים) — "sons of the Elohim" (Genesis 6:2, 6:4), the figures who take human wives and produce the Nephilim. Conventional translations soften the phrase to "sons of God" (singular) or apologetically reinterpret it as "godly men."
  • Various others — Nephilim, tannin, malakh, cherubim, seraphim

Biglino's own position on terms he considers untranslatable, articulated in The Naked Bible:

"I've said many times in recent years that there are terms that, in my opinion, should not be translated. It's a question of integrity, since we do not know exactly what they mean. So honesty requires leaving them just as they are written."

The footnoted reference in the v1 entry observes that during Biglino's Edizioni San Paolo translation work, terms including Elohim, kavod, ruach, and Yahweh were preserved in transliteration in the published Italian editions — registering that mainstream Catholic biblical publishing recognized the integrity concerns even in formally orthodox contexts.

Step 2: Disregard all preconceived traditional interpretations

The second step is provisional methodological suspension of accumulated theological framework. The reader sets aside, for the duration of the reading exercise, the inherited Christian, Jewish, Islamic, and (where applicable) academic theological frameworks that shape default interpretation of biblical passages.

The methodological suspension is not the same as rejection. Biglino does not require the reader to conclude that the traditional interpretations are wrong; he requires that they be held in abeyance during the reading exercise so that the text can be encountered without the interpretive filter. The result of the reading is then compared against the traditional interpretations to see which provides the more coherent account.

The principal traditional frameworks the method asks the reader to suspend:

  • Christian Trinitarian theology — which reads the Hebrew Bible through subsequent Christian doctrinal categories (the Father of the New Testament, the pre-incarnate Word, the Spirit of subsequent pneumatology)
  • Jewish rabbinic monotheism — which reads the Hebrew Bible's plural Elohim as grammatical singular and interprets various plural passages as majestic plurals or as collective addresses to angelic courts
  • Islamic strict monotheism — which reads the Hebrew Bible's monotheistic framework as the original pre-corrupted form subsequently distorted by Jewish and Christian transmission
  • Mainstream academic historical-critical method — which often treats the Hebrew Bible's narrative content as the product of theological and political concerns of its various editorial communities, with the underlying historical content treated as substantially unrecoverable

The suspension is provisional. After the literal reading produces its account, the reader can compare what the literal reading yields against the various inherited frameworks. The frameworks can be retained, modified, or replaced based on which produces the more coherent account of the actual textual content.

Step 3: Embrace a literal approach to reading the verses

The third step is the literal reading itself — taking the words and phrases in the text at face value, in their concrete sense, without imposing metaphorical or allegorical interpretation.

The literal approach is not naive literalism. Biglino acknowledges that the Hebrew Bible contains literary devices — poetry, parallelism, metaphor, narrative compression, genre conventions appropriate to ancient Near Eastern literature. The point is not to deny the presence of these features but to discern between passages where the text intends figurative content and passages where the text intends concrete description. The default presumption shifts: rather than presuming figurative content unless concrete content is required, the method presumes concrete content unless figurative content is signaled by the text.

  • Genesis 6:1-4's bnei ha-Elohim taking bnot ha-adam (daughters of men) and producing Nephilim — read literally as describing a specific kind of being (the "sons of the Elohim") engaging in reproductive activity with human women and producing offspring of distinctive character, rather than read as theological allegory or as "sons of Seth marrying daughters of Cain"
  • Ezekiel 1's vision of the four living creatures, the wheels within wheels, the firmament, and the throne — read as a description of an observed physical object whose technical character the prophet lacked vocabulary to describe in any other way, rather than as visionary symbolism
  • Exodus 19's account of Yahweh's descent upon Sinai in fire, smoke, thunder, and earthquake — read as an account of a powered descent of a substantial physical object, rather than as theophanic poetry
  • The Ark of the Covenant's capacity to kill on contact (2 Samuel 6:7's death of Uzzah, 1 Samuel 6:19's destruction of the men of Beth-Shemesh) — read as evidence of a high-energy device with specific handling requirements, rather than as symbolic accounts of divine sanctity

The literal reading produces, in each case, an account that the conventional theological framework either treats as symbolic or simply leaves uninterpreted. The Biglino Method's claim is that the literal reading is the more natural reading once the theological filter is set aside.

Biography

Mauro Biglino was born in 1950. His early academic training was in religious studies and classical languages. From approximately 1990 to 2007, he worked as a Hebrew Bible translator for Edizioni San Paolo (the Pauline Editions, the Italian publishing arm of the Society of St. Paul, a Catholic religious congregation founded by Saint James Alberione). The Pauline Editions publish religious materials for Catholic readers, with substantial Vatican connections through the broader Catholic publishing infrastructure.

The seventeen-year period of professional translation work is the foundation of Biglino's subsequent authority on the Hebrew text. Alter differs from Biglino in commitments and conclusions. Alter does not draw the conclusions Biglino draws about the Hebrew Bible's content because Alter is not working within an ancient-astronaut interpretive framework. The Pali Canon's accounts of the Buddha's life and teaching activity are read by the Theravada tradition as substantially historical, with specific geographic locations, named interlocutors, and dated events treated as recoverable historical content. The cross-cultural pattern across these various traditions has a consistent structure:

  • A traditional text is preserved within a religious or cultural tradition that treats it as authoritative
  • Mainstream secular scholarship at some point in the modern period treats the text as substantially mythological, with limited historical content
  • A figure (or several figures) proposes the literal reading and pursues it against the prevailing scholarly consensus
  • Archaeological or other independent evidence vindicates substantial elements of the literal reading
  • Mainstream scholarship absorbs the vindicated elements while continuing to debate the limits of the literal reading

The Biglino Method as applied to the Hebrew Bible occupies the third stage of this pattern — the literal-reading proposal against the prevailing scholarly consensus. Whether the subsequent stages will follow — whether independent evidence will vindicate substantial elements of the literal reading — is the question the broader corpus framework engages.

Cross-cultural "hidden-meaning" engagement as the contrasting tradition

The opposing methodological tradition, against which the Biglino Method positions itself, is the cross-cultural tradition of treating sacred texts as containing hidden or symbolic meanings that require specialized interpretive techniques to recover.

Within the biblical tradition, this is the tradition of allegorical exegesis — Philo of Alexandria reading the Hebrew Bible through Platonic philosophical categories, Origen and the Alexandrian Christian fathers developing the four-fold sense of Scripture (literal, allegorical, moral, anagogical), the medieval Christian and Jewish mystical traditions reading the texts as ciphers for spiritual realities. The tradition continues in various contemporary forms — theological readings that find Christological prefigurations throughout the Hebrew Bible, Kabbalistic readings that find esoteric content in every textual feature, psychological-archetypal readings (Jung, Campbell) that find universal symbolic patterns.

The Biglino Method's principal methodological claim is that the allegorical-hidden-meaning tradition has substantially obscured the texts' actual content. The texts, on the Biglino Method's view, are not principally ciphers for theological or spiritual content; they are accounts of events, written in pre-scientific vocabulary that the subsequent traditions have systematically reinterpreted to fit their theological needs.

The texts do contain literary devices, poetry, parallelism, narrative compression — features that require attention to genre and convention rather than naive literalism.
